This drop-in figure drawing course is suitable for all skill levels. Untrained new artists will learn multiple approaches to figure drawing while seasoned artists will have the opportunity to hone their skills and further train their eye. Each class will feature a nude model and begin with quick gesture poses. The remaining time will be spent on the artistry of longer poses. The goal is to train all artists to more quickly and fluidly capture the gesture of the entire figure.
Drop-in and practice figure drawing on two select Tuesday* evenings each month. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our nude model. *Most sessions are on Tuesday evenings, but in 2025 there will be a session on Thursday, November 13 and a few costumed sessions on Thursday evenings in October. Traditional drawing media (such as pencils, pens, and charcoal) are welcome; and pastels, watercolor and ink are permissible. Please do not bring acrylics or oil paints. We don’t supply easels – only plenty of chairs – but you are welcome to bring your own easel if you want to use one. All skill levels are welcome. The first part of this session will be focused on gesture poses (dynamic 1-5 minute poses) to loosen up and participate in a fun, fast-paced drawing experience. The second hour will be a few short poses for more detailed drawings leading up to up to two 20-minute poses.
This session offers a unique twist: instead of the traditional nude models, you’ll find costumed models illuminated with captivating colors. This refreshing approach allows attendees to relax and enjoy the practice of figure drawing in a new light. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a hobbyist, “Draped + Lit” provides a welcoming space where artists can explore different styles, fashions, body types, and ethnicities, perfect for illustrators and animators seeking fresh challenges. Questions? contact organizers Alex Ebisawa (352-843-5477) or Gyasi Ottley (202-321-6681).

This is NOT a typical, quiet figure drawing group. This is a fun, social, community group. We have weekly Tuesday night sessions, and occasional popups, workshops, and other collaborations with local organizations. It gets crowded as hell. There is inconsistent, spontaneous instruction that is generally focused on loosening up and letting go of perfectionism. There are no requirements for membership; this could be your first time touching a pencil (although that would be weird). We want you and your energy – we don’t care about your resume. This group has a focus on socializing and getting to know other people. Come prepared to chat with strangers. Everything is always provided. We’ve got snacks but BYOB. Supplies of all manner are provided – big paper, small paper, charcoal, pencils, markers, etc. Feel free to bring your own supplies. There is an Instagram group! It’s @LifeDrawingBoston. Follow! Tag us in your work! Getting here: Joy St. Studios is right off the East Somerville green line stop. There is a bike path and a blue bike station steps from the entrance. There is a parking lot for your car. If you are interested in participating in the carpool program, please get in touch with David at (240) 678-4399.
