Looking for a supportive and friendly environment to hone your artistic skills? About Face Drawing Sessions are for you! There’s no instructor, but there is a group of inspired artists, representing a wide range of abilities, who love to draw from the live model. Drawing sessions are held at the historic 701 Whaley venue throughout museum renovations. Must be 18 or older to participate. First Session is free.
During an Art League Life Model drawing session, there will be a model, male or female, most often time nude, surrounded by artists. The model will be posing for different durations. From shortest to longest. The poses can vary from 2 minutes to 10 minutes, then followed by a long pose of 20 to 30 minutes. The exact time and number of poses can vary from session to session. The shorter poses are meant to loosen you up, make you more comfortable with your lines and warm up. During the short poses, many artists do gesture drawings. Gesture drawings are meant for more difficult poses that the model cannot hold for a long period of time. These are great for more advanced artists but might seem a bit intimidating for beginners. That is okay, remember this is only for you! Some popular mediums used during life drawings are charcoal, graphite. pen, ink and pastels. For the longer poses, some may use painting mediums like acrylics or oil, or, go back after the session and add in additional media. Feel free to bring and use whatever you desire.
Our Sunday Night Figure Drawing sessions take place every Sunday from 5 – 7 pm excluding holiday weekends or weekends adjacent to holidays.  ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST AGREE TO THE FIGURE DRAWING CLASS ETIQUETTE CONTRACT. In a professional and academic environment, artists work from a nude model in a variety of artistic mediums, with poses ranging from 30 seconds to 25 min – perfect for anyone wanting to work independently with a model at your own pace. An instructor will be present to facilitate the session and help as needed. No instruction will be given. All skill levels are welcome to join in. Easels, chairs, and drawing boards are provided. Artists must bring their own drawing and/or painting materials.
